Considering Signal; rant about contacts management software; video of the day

Posted on Jan 9, 2021

I am considering moving from WhatsApp to Signal; the only problem is to convince the few people with which I exchange messages to give it a try. I deem it as almost impossible. Life is hard!

I wish home banking services could switch from sending SMSs to sending safe notifications with a safe messaging software. This is science fiction!

I use the default contacts management application on my smartphone. It is very important. I find it very dangerous. One’s own contacts list is one of the most sensitive informations about oneself and other people; if someone entrusts me with the knowledge of his/her phone number, I have to take good care of this information; I expect others to do the same; this does not always happen.

Even though I do not trust the contacts application to obey my commands, I have turned off the automatic backup feature, which would give away the contacts list to the producer of the software. If I export the contacts list to a file on the memory expansion card: I give it away to every application that can access the file system.

As far as I know there is no safe and trustable contacts list application out there. Darn!
