1.5 Installation and uninstallation

There are two ways to install Vicare Scheme on our system: we can either install a prebuilt package, if one is available for our operating system, or we can build it from source. There are two reasons to prefer the “build from source” approach: first, not all Unix/Linux package repositories have an Vicare Scheme package at all; second, prebuilt packages often lag current revisions to the system by a considerable amount. Therefore, the version we install from a package repository might not even have some of the features documented in this manual.

We will assume in this section that we are building Vicare Scheme ourselves. Vicare uses the standard installation method found in most other Unix software. Thus we will follow the usual steps.

  1. Download the software.
  2. Set configuration options.
  3. Build and install
